The question I’m asked most often before a couples session is “What should we wear for our photos?”
The most important thing is to be authentic. It is important to wear something that is comfortable to you and to your boo, reflecting who you guys really are. If you never wear dresses in real life, maybe a dress isn’t the right way to go for this picture. Your clothing should reflect both of your personalities and compliment one another! Depending on the package you chose, you might consider up to 2 outfits (casual + formal for example).
Additionally, there are times we will be laying down, sitting on the ground, leaning, walking, and maybe even dancing so you want to be comfortable!
A great color palette creates a flattering environment for skin tones, and helps everything come together during the editing process. Start by picking a palette of 2-3 colors. Let this be your starting place. I recommend sticking to the same color palette for both you and your boo that way you guys look cohesive and compliment one another. Neutral, warm colors and deep jewel tones are ideal! Think terra cotta, blush, gold, hunter green, and lighter shades of denim. Avoid basic black and white, as they can appear stark and distracting in photos. Avoid bright, primary colors – these colors tend to reflect onto skin and create unflattering skin tones. Color palette is priority number one in setting the tone for a beautiful gallery!
When planning your outfits, make sure that you have a variety of looks! Choose from these categories: casual, cozy, or dressy. I always recommend choosing 2 of those categories and finding an outfit for you and your boo that go with each one. This makes sure that both of your outfits (if you chose 2 outfits) looks different!
Skip the tiny prints and patterns because they do not show up on the photo. Also, if you have too many wild patterns or lots of text/imagery on your clothes, it’ll distract from your face. I like to recommend solids or soft, simple patterns like florals. If you want to wear a pattern that is okay but it is best to only have one person where a pattern instead of both of you. For example, if the girl wants to wear a floral dress, the guy should dress in a solid color that goes with her dress. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to shoot me an email or text with outfit ideas for you two! I’m happy to help!
Comfort is key! Discomfort tends to show in the face, and that is the opposite of what I want for your photos. If there are pieces in your closet that make you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable, don’t include them in your session! Find clothing items that you can move around and sit comfortably in, we will most likely be sitting on the ground, laying down, walking and doing other things that could be difficult if your clothing is uncomfortable! I want you to feel the most confident and comfortable in your outfit choices. Choose outfits that are timeless and classic. Trust me. You’ll look back at your portraits 20 years from now and still love them.
If you’re getting couples photos done in the fall, think of cozy sweaters and jackets. You want to be comfortable and not freezing because you are wearing a summer dress, so just plan accordingly. On that same token, it’ll look silly if you show up wearing snow boots in the middle of a flower field and green grass all around.
Don’t ignore what goes on your feet. Wear comfortable shoes, boots or go bare foot. Bring options so you have the chance to change if your shoes are uncomfortable.
